Issues Fixed by Service Pack 1 (SP1) in the Office 2010 Desktop Applications

June 30, 2011 1 comment

Microsoft has released SP1 for office 2010 with a whole bunch of fixes. Here is the detailed list of fixes for your easy reference from MS article: Description of Office 2010 SP1

Notes

1. Service Pack 1 includes a rollup of all Cumulative Updates released through April 2011 and all Public Updates released through June 2011. They are not included in the list below, which is specific to changes that are shipping for the first time in SP1.

2. Because we relied on experts of each product to write the text below, the phrasing throughout the table is not 100% consistent. Some of the text simply describes a problem that was fixed by SP1, while other text describes the problem and the new behavior after installing SP1. When reading the list below, please keep in mind that, despite the individual phrasing of each description, all of the issues listed should be fixed in SP1.

3. In addition to the fixes listed below, SP1 contains additional changes which are less visible, but improve various aspects of the product. This includes reducing the number of crashes, improving security, and fixing other issues that were deemed to be too specific to include in this list.

The state of “Ignore” and “Ignore All” spelling check functions do not persist when a document that is not based on Normal.dotm is saved, closed, and reopened.

Word

Auto-run macros in a document on a SharePoint site do not run when you open the document through a link in Internet Explorer.

Word

Documents are printed incorrectly when the "Print in background" option is disabled.

Word

Word and Outlook respond slowly when the system resumes from hibernation.

Word

Double "smart quotes" do not have the correct format in Norwegian text.

Word

When you delete a range of text that includes a paragraph mark when Track Changes is turned on, an extra paragraph mark is inserted.

Word

UNC names that include ideographic commas do not display as hyperlinks.

Word

An error that says "A table in this document has become corrupted" occurs after you reject a change to nested tables.

Word

Bold text is not rendered for certain fonts.

Word

You have a document that contains a pasted link. After you turn on Track Changes in the document, a copy of the pasted link is added to the document every time that you update the pasted link. Additionally, the links become broken.

Word

When the result of a comparison between two documents is saved, style changes are incorrectly reported.

Word

When you receive a plain text e-mail message that contains a URL, and the body of the e-mail contains the word "From:" at the start of the line above the URL, the URL is not displayed as a hyperlink.

Word

In some cases, when Track Changes is enabled, the same behavior occurs when you reject a deletion change as when you accept a deletion change.

Word

When you print "n-up," the printer’s default page size used instead of the document’s page size.

Word

Fonts that have PostScript outlines are rendered incorrectly when the file is opened in landscape orientation.

Word

The NUMPAGES field does not work when you print in the foreground.

Word

You cannot input Japanese characters correctly in a page footer.

PS: Dynamically Creating Folder and File Structure

June 29, 2011 Leave a comment

In many cases, systems engineers require to setup a system where in they need to automatically create a file and folder structure. Here is a simple code that serves such a need:

$Folder   = "D:\TEMP"
$UserName = “TestUser009”
$FileName = "ReadMe.txt"
$Path     = $Folder + ‘\’ + $UserName

if (!(Test-Path -path $Path)){
    new-item -path $Folder -name $UserName -type directory
}

if (!(Test-Path -path "$Path\$FileName")){
    new-item -path $Path -name $FileName -type file
}

PowerShell Script to Dynamically Map a Free Drive Letter

June 29, 2011 Leave a comment

In case when you need to map a local path as a new drive at a runtime, you need to determine which letter is free for use as a next drive letter. Here is a simple code that does this:

foreach ($letter in [char[]]([char]‘A’..[char]‘Z’)) {
    $drive = $letter + ‘:’
    if (!(Test-Path -path $drive)){
        break
    }
}

SUBST $drive "C:\Temp\User1Data"

For a descending order of processing change the alphabets series as below in foreach loop

foreach ($letter in [char[]]([char]‘Z’..[char]‘A’)) {

This can be a usual case for virtualized environments where you support mapping client devices as drives in the session as well as need to create a new drive with a free letter name dynamically.

Troubleshooting Simple Internet Explorer Issues

June 29, 2011 Leave a comment

…to handle issues like when you click a hyperlink on a webpage or in an email message, nothing happens. Internet Explorer does not open the webpage.

Such a behavior may occur for one or more of the following reasons:

  • A corrupted browser choice setting may cause Windows to misinterpret which browser is set as the default browser on your computer.
  • Settings were changed after a software installation that cause webpages not to work correctly.
  • A previously installed browser or add-on may be interfering with other software on your computer.
  • Registry key were changed or became corrupted.
Method 1: Check your default web browser setting

In Microsoft Windows, you can select which web browser to use by default. To make Internet

Explorer your default web browser, follow these steps:

  1. To open Internet Explorer, click Start, and then click Internet Explorer.
  2. If you are prompted whether you want Internet Explorer to be your default browser, click Yes. This is all that you have to do.
If a message does not appear, go to the next step.
  3. Click the Tools button, and then click Internet Options.
  4. Click the Programs tab, and then click Make default.
  5. Click OK, and then close Internet Explorer.
Note Your changes will take effect the next time that you start Internet Explorer.

Check whether the problem is resolved. If the problem is resolved, you are finished with this article. If the problem is not resolved, try the next method.

Method 2: Change the file types that Internet Explorer opens by default

For Windows 7 and Windows Vista

  1. Close any Internet Explorer windows that are open.
  2. Click Start, and then click Control Panel.
  3. Click Programs, and then click Set your default programs.
  4. On the Programs menu, click Internet Explorer, and then click Choose defaults for this program.
  5. Make sure that the check boxes for .htm, .html, and .url are selected, and then click Save.
  6. Click OK.
Note Your changes will take effect the next time that you start Internet Explorer.

For Windows XP

  1. To open Windows Explorer, right-click Start, and then click My Computer.
  2. On the Tools menu, click Folder Options, and then click the File Types tab.
  3. Locate and select the HTM file type.
  4. Make sure that Internet Explorer is selected as the Opens with program. If Internet Explorer is not selected, click Change, select Internet Explorer as the recommended program, and then click OK.
  5. Repeat steps 3 and 4 for the following file types:
    HTML
    ITS
    MHT
    MTHML
    XML
    XSL

Check whether the problem is resolved. If the problem is resolved, you are finished with this article, If the problem is not resolved, go to the next method.

Method 3: Use the Internet Explorer (No Add-ons) mode

Although browser add-ons can improve your online experience, they can occasionally interfere or conflict with other software on your computer. However, be aware that some webpages, or Internet Explorer itself, might not be displayed correctly if an add-on is disabled. First, start Internet Explorer with add-ons temporarily disabled to see whether the problem is resolved. (Add-ons will be disabled only until you restart Internet Explorer in the usual way). To do this, follow these steps:

  • Click Start, type Internet Explorer in the Search box, and then click Internet Explorer (No Add-ons).
Note For Windows XP, click Start, right-click the Internet Explorer icon, and then click Browse without add-ons.

If Internet Explorer No Add-ons resolves the problem, follow these steps to identify the browser add-on that is causing the problem:

  1. To start Internet Explorer, click Start, and then click Internet Explorer.
  2. Click the Tools button, and then click Manage add-ons.
  3. Click an add-on in the Name list, and then click Disable. Test Internet Explorer.
  4. Repeat step 3 until you identify the add-on that is causing the problem.

Check whether the problem is resolved. If the problem is resolved, you are finished with this article. If the problem is not resolved, try the next method.

Method 4: Reset Internet Explorer settings

If the problem is caused by damaged or incompatible Internet Explorer settings or add-ons, you can usually resolve the problem by resetting Internet Explorer settings to their default settings.
Resetting Internet Explorer’s settings is not reversible. After a reset, all previous settings are lost and cannot be recovered. When you restore Internet Explorer’s default settings, some webpages that rely on previously stored cookies, form data, passwords, or previously installed browser add-ons might not work correctly. However, resetting Internet Explorer to its default settings does not delete your favorites, feeds, or several other personal settings.
To Reset Internet Explorer Settings, follow these steps:

  1. Close all open Internet Explorer windows.
  2. Click Start, type inetcpl.cpl in the Search box and then click inetcpl.cpl in the programs list.
The Internet Options dialog box appears.
Note for Windows XP, click Start, click Run, type inetcpl.cpl in the Open box, and then click OK.
  3. Click the Advanced tab.
  4. Under Reset Internet Explorer Settings, click Reset. Then click Reset again.
  5. When Internet Explorer finishes resetting the settings, click Close in the Reset Internet Explorer Settings dialog box.
  6. Start Internet Explorer again.
Your changes will take effect the next time you open Internet Explorer.
Note Your changes will take effect the next time that you start Internet Explorer.
Method 5: Reregister the necessary Internet Explorer DLL files

Note This information applies to Windows XP
To reregister the DLL files, follow these steps:

  1. Click Start, click All Programs, click Accessories, right-click cmd, and then select Run as administrator. If you are prompted for an administrator password or confirmation, type the password or provide confirmation.
  2. Type regsvr32 urlmon.dll in the Open box, and then click OK.
  3. Click OK when you receive the confirmation.
  4. Repeat steps 2 and 3 for the following commands:
    regsvr32 mshtml.dll
    regsvr32 shdocvw.dll
    regsvr32 browseui.dll
    regsvr32 msjava.dll

Check whether the problem is resolved. If the problem is resolved, you are finished with this article. If the problem is not fixed, go to the next section.

How Windows Update Stand-alone Installer (Wusa.exe) Works

June 29, 2011 Leave a comment

This article describes the Windows Update Stand-alone Installer (Wusa.exe) in Windows Vista, Windows 7, Windows Server 2008 and in Windows Server 2008 R2. The Wusa.exe file is in the %windir%\System32 folder. The Windows Update Stand-alone Installer uses the Windows Update Agent API to install update packages. Update packages have an .msu file name extension. The .msu file name extension is associated with the Windows Update Stand-alone Installer.

MORE INFORMATION

An .msu file contains the following contents:

  • Windows Update metadata
This metadata describes each update package that the .msu file contains.
  • One or more .cab files
Each .cab file represents one update.
  • An .xml file
This .xml file describes the .msu update package. Wusa.exe uses the .xml file when you perform an unattended installation of the update by using the Package Manager tool (Pkgmgr.exe).
For example, you download hotfix 934307. The Windows6.0-KB934307-x86.msu file is in the C:\934307 folder. You type the following command at a command prompt to expand the .msu file to a temporary folder:

    expand -f:* "C:\934307\Windows6.0-KB934307-x86.msu" %TEMP%

Then, you type the following command at a command prompt:

    pkgmgr.exe /n:%TEMP%\Windows6.0-KB934307-x86.xml

  • A properties file
This file contains string properties that Wusa.exe uses. For example, this file contains the name of the associated article in the Microsoft Knowledge Base.

When you use Wusa.exe to install an update package, Wusa.exe expands the contents of the .msu file to a temporary folder. Then, Wusa.exe performs the following steps:

  1. Wusa.exe uses the Windows Update metadata in the .msu file to search for applicable updates.
  2. Wusa.exe copies the contents of the applicable updates to the Windows Update sandbox. The Windows Update sandbox is a protected folder.
  3. Wusa.exe calls the appropriate function in the Windows Update Agent API according to the mode in which you start Wusa.exe.
  4. When the Windows Update wizard completes the installation, the Windows Update Agent API returns a status. Then, Wusa.exe works synchronously with Windows Update Agent API.

Note Each update in an .msu update package is installed in a separate session. Only one instance of Wusa.exe runs when you use Wusa.exe. Wusa.exe does not modify the contents of the updates in .msu files. The Windows Update infrastructure performs the required actions according to the contents of the update.
When you start Wusa.exe in interactive mode, a welcome screen displays high-level information about the update. If you continue to install the update, Wusa.exe calls the appropriate function in the Windows Update Agent API to start the Windows Update wizard. The Windows Update wizard displays the Microsoft Software License Terms that are associated with the update package. Wusa.exe calls the Windows Update Agent API to continue the installation. Then, Wusa.exe waits until the Windows Update wizard finishes the installation.
To install an .msu update package, run Wusa.exe together with the full path of the file. For example, if the Windows6.0-KB934307-x86.msu file is in the D:\934307 folder, type the following command at a command prompt to install the update package:

wusa.exe d:\934307\Windows6.0-KB934307-x86.msu

You can also double-click the .msu file to install the update package.
Note You cannot use Wusa.exe to uninstall updates in Windows Vista, Windows 7, Windows Server 2008 or in Windows Server 2008 R2. You can use Windows Defender Software Explorer to manually uninstall the updates. For more information about Software Explorer, visit the following Microsoft Web site:

http://www.microsoft.com/windows/products/winfamily/defender/softwareexplorer.mspx

You can use the following switches together with Wusa.exe:

  • /?, /h, /help
    View help.
  • /quiet
Run Wusa.exe in quiet mode without user interaction. When the tool runs in quiet mode, it runs without user interaction. The computer restarts if it is required.
For example, if the Windows6.0-KB934307-x86.msu file is in the D:\934307 folder, type the following command at a command prompt to install the update package without user interaction:

    wusa.exe d:\934307\Windows6.0-KB934307-x86.msu /quiet

Note When you use this switch, the Microsoft Software License Terms do not appear.

  • /norestart
Prevent Wusa.exe from restarting the computer. The /norestart switch is ignored if the /quiet switch is not present. If you run Wusa.exe together with these two switches, you must manually restart the operating system after the installation is complete if the installation requires that you restart the computer.
For example, if the Windows6.0-KB934307-x86.msu file is in the D:\934307 folder, type the following command at a command prompt to install the update package:

    wusa.exe D:\934307\Windows6.0-KB934307-x86.msu /quiet /norestart

To view the Windows Update Stand-alone Installer event log, follow these steps:

  1. Click Start

    Start button

, type event viewer in the Start Search box, and then click Event Viewer in the Programs list.

    Security shield

If you are prompted for an administrator password or for confirmation, type the password, or click Continue.

  2. In Event Viewer, expand Windows Logs, and then click Setup.
Setup events appear in the middle pane.
  3. In the Actions pane, click Filter Current Log.
  4. In the Event sources list, click to select the WUSA check box, and then click OK.
