Part 1: Your computer

Check for viruses and malware

While no virus scanner can catch 100% of infections, it is still important to run a scan on your computer with a trusted anti-virus software (or install a program that runs in the background and scans continuously). If the scan detects any suspicious programs or applications, remove them immediately. Find virus scanners here.

Make sure your operating system is up to date

Operating systems release patches to repair security vulnerabilities. Whether you use Windows or Mac OS, we recommend protecting your computer by enabling your automatic update setting, and updating when you get a notification.

Make sure to perform regular software updates

Some software updates aren’t included in your operating system updates, but they are just as important. Software such as Adobe Flash, Adobe Reader, and Java release regular updates that may include repairs for security vulnerabilities.

Make sure your browser is up to date

To check for browser updates in Internet Explorer, select the Tools tab and click Windows Update. In Firefox, just click the Help tab and select Check for Updates. Google Chrome automatically updates when a new version is released.

Check your browser for plug-ins, extensions, and third-party programs/tools that require access to your Google Account credentials

Plug-ins and extensions are downloadable computer programs that work with your browser to perform specific tasks. For example, you may have downloaded a plug-in or extension that checks your Gmail inbox for new messages. Google can’t guarantee the security of these third party services. If those services are compromised, so is your Gmail password.

Change your password

If your account has been recently compromised, you should update your password now. In general we suggest you change it periodically, following these guidelines:

  • Pick a unique password that you haven’t previously used on other sites or on Gmail. Just changing one character or number still counts as reusing your password.
  • Don’t use a dictionary word or a common word that’s easily guessable. Use a combination of numbers, characters, and case-sensitive letters.
Update your account recovery options

We all may forget our passwords at some point, so we strongly encourage that you update your account recovery options. To update these options, sign in to your Google Account by going to https://www.google.com/accounts and click Recovering your password.

  • Recovery email address: We can use your recovery email address to communicate with you if you lose access to your account. Learn more.
  • SMS: We can send you a recovery code to your mobile phone number, which you can use to reset your password. Learn more.
  • Secret question: This option is only available if you can’t use the above recovery options and only if haven’t tried to sign in during the past 24 hours. An ideal answer to your security question is easy for you to remember, but hard for others to guess.
Turn on 2-step verification

2-step verification adds an extra layer of security to your account by requiring you to sign in with something you know (your password) and something you have (a code sent to your phone).

To turn on 2-step verification, follow the instructions on the 2-step verification setup page.

Check the list of websites that are authorized to access your Google Account data

Make sure that the list of authorized websites are accurate and ones that you have chosen. If your Google Account has been compromised recently, it’s possible that the bad guys could have authorized their own websites to access your account data. This may allow them to access your Google Account after you have changed your password.

To edit the list of authorized websites:

  1. Sign in on the Google Accounts homepage.
  2. Click the My Account link displayed at the top right of the page.
  3. Click Authorizing applications & sites. This page will list all third-party sites you’ve granted access to.
  4. Click the Revoke Access link to disable access for a site.

Use a secure connection to sign in.

In your Gmail settings, select ‘Always use HTTPS.’ This setting protects your information from being stolen when you’re signing in to Gmail on a public wireless network, like at a cafe or hotel. Read more.

Check for any strange recent activity on your account.

Click the Details link next to the ‘Last Account Activity’ entry at the bottom of your account to see the time, date, IP address and the associated location of recent access to your account.

Confirm the accuracy of your mail settings to ensure that your mail stays and goes where you want it to.

Sign in to your account and click on the Settings link at the top to check the following tabs:

  • General: Check Signature, Vacation Responder, and/or canned responses for spammy content
  • Accounts: Verify your settings under Send mail as, which includes checking your reply-to settings, Check mail using POP3, and Grant access to your account.
  • Filters: Check that no filters are sending your mail to Trash, Spam, or forwarding to an unknown account.
  • Forwarding and POP/IMAP: Ensure your mail isn’t sent to an unknown account or mail client.
Check your contacts for errors.

Sign in to your account and click Contacts. If you don’t see all of the contacts you expect to see, you can restore your contacts to an earlier time period.

Watch out for messages that ask for your username and/or password. Gmail will never ask for this information.
Never give out your password after following a link sent to you in a message, even if it looks like Gmail’s sign-in page. Access Gmail directly by typing https://mail.google.com in your browser’s address bar.
Don’t share your password with other websites – Google can’t guarantee the security of other websites and your Gmail password could be compromised.
Keep secrets! Never tell anyone your password, or your secret question and answer; if you do tell someone, change it as soon as possible.
Clear forms, passwords, cache and cookies in your browser on a regular basis – especially on a public computer.
Only select ‘Stay signed in’ if you’re signing in from a personal computer.
Always sign out when you’ve finished reading your mail.

Credential Manager stores credentials (user name and passwords) that you use to log on to websites or other computers on a network. By storing your credentials, Windows can automatically log you on to websites or other computers.

Credentials are saved in special folders on your computer called vaults. Windows and programs (such as web browsers) can securely give the credentials in the vaults to other computers and websites.

One can manage (add/edit/remove) these credentials manual. The use case of this feature is like saving RDP/TS credentials for auto login.

Issues Fixed by Service Pack 1 (SP1) in the Office 2010 Desktop Applications

June 30, 2011 1 comment

Microsoft has released SP1 for office 2010 with a whole bunch of fixes. Here is the detailed list of fixes for your easy reference from MS article: Description of Office 2010 SP1

Notes

1. Service Pack 1 includes a rollup of all Cumulative Updates released through April 2011 and all Public Updates released through June 2011. They are not included in the list below, which is specific to changes that are shipping for the first time in SP1.

2. Because we relied on experts of each product to write the text below, the phrasing throughout the table is not 100% consistent. Some of the text simply describes a problem that was fixed by SP1, while other text describes the problem and the new behavior after installing SP1. When reading the list below, please keep in mind that, despite the individual phrasing of each description, all of the issues listed should be fixed in SP1.

3. In addition to the fixes listed below, SP1 contains additional changes which are less visible, but improve various aspects of the product. This includes reducing the number of crashes, improving security, and fixing other issues that were deemed to be too specific to include in this list.

How Windows Update Stand-alone Installer (Wusa.exe) Works

June 29, 2011 Leave a comment

This article describes the Windows Update Stand-alone Installer (Wusa.exe) in Windows Vista, Windows 7, Windows Server 2008 and in Windows Server 2008 R2. The Wusa.exe file is in the %windir%\System32 folder. The Windows Update Stand-alone Installer uses the Windows Update Agent API to install update packages. Update packages have an .msu file name extension. The .msu file name extension is associated with the Windows Update Stand-alone Installer.

MORE INFORMATION

An .msu file contains the following contents:

  • Windows Update metadata
This metadata describes each update package that the .msu file contains.
  • One or more .cab files
Each .cab file represents one update.
  • An .xml file
This .xml file describes the .msu update package. Wusa.exe uses the .xml file when you perform an unattended installation of the update by using the Package Manager tool (Pkgmgr.exe).
For example, you download hotfix 934307. The Windows6.0-KB934307-x86.msu file is in the C:\934307 folder. You type the following command at a command prompt to expand the .msu file to a temporary folder:

    expand -f:* "C:\934307\Windows6.0-KB934307-x86.msu" %TEMP%

Then, you type the following command at a command prompt:

    pkgmgr.exe /n:%TEMP%\Windows6.0-KB934307-x86.xml

  • A properties file
This file contains string properties that Wusa.exe uses. For example, this file contains the name of the associated article in the Microsoft Knowledge Base.

When you use Wusa.exe to install an update package, Wusa.exe expands the contents of the .msu file to a temporary folder. Then, Wusa.exe performs the following steps:

  1. Wusa.exe uses the Windows Update metadata in the .msu file to search for applicable updates.
  2. Wusa.exe copies the contents of the applicable updates to the Windows Update sandbox. The Windows Update sandbox is a protected folder.
  3. Wusa.exe calls the appropriate function in the Windows Update Agent API according to the mode in which you start Wusa.exe.
  4. When the Windows Update wizard completes the installation, the Windows Update Agent API returns a status. Then, Wusa.exe works synchronously with Windows Update Agent API.

Note Each update in an .msu update package is installed in a separate session. Only one instance of Wusa.exe runs when you use Wusa.exe. Wusa.exe does not modify the contents of the updates in .msu files. The Windows Update infrastructure performs the required actions according to the contents of the update.
When you start Wusa.exe in interactive mode, a welcome screen displays high-level information about the update. If you continue to install the update, Wusa.exe calls the appropriate function in the Windows Update Agent API to start the Windows Update wizard. The Windows Update wizard displays the Microsoft Software License Terms that are associated with the update package. Wusa.exe calls the Windows Update Agent API to continue the installation. Then, Wusa.exe waits until the Windows Update wizard finishes the installation.
To install an .msu update package, run Wusa.exe together with the full path of the file. For example, if the Windows6.0-KB934307-x86.msu file is in the D:\934307 folder, type the following command at a command prompt to install the update package:

wusa.exe d:\934307\Windows6.0-KB934307-x86.msu

You can also double-click the .msu file to install the update package.
Note You cannot use Wusa.exe to uninstall updates in Windows Vista, Windows 7, Windows Server 2008 or in Windows Server 2008 R2. You can use Windows Defender Software Explorer to manually uninstall the updates. For more information about Software Explorer, visit the following Microsoft Web site:

http://www.microsoft.com/windows/products/winfamily/defender/softwareexplorer.mspx

You can use the following switches together with Wusa.exe:

  • /?, /h, /help
    View help.
  • /quiet
Run Wusa.exe in quiet mode without user interaction. When the tool runs in quiet mode, it runs without user interaction. The computer restarts if it is required.
For example, if the Windows6.0-KB934307-x86.msu file is in the D:\934307 folder, type the following command at a command prompt to install the update package without user interaction:

    wusa.exe d:\934307\Windows6.0-KB934307-x86.msu /quiet

Securely Managing Your Credentials and Identity Details

With the ever growing internet access facilities, to today’s all critical services, one need to know how effectively and securely they can manage their various credentials and identity details. Here is a simple way of securing your details using a password managing software called KeyPass.  KeyPass is an OSI certified, free, open source, light-weight and easy-to-use password manager.

Using KeyPass:

Access to your whole data saved in keyPass file is controlled via master password that you specify while creating your KeyPass file.

image

For ease of verification/confirmation, software allows you to show the password text you entered by clicking on the “” button (called Show/Hide passwords using asterisks).

image

Application saves all your data in it’s proprietary database format.

image

image

With this you’ll have a default keyPass File created as shown below

image

You can create a whole of folder hierarchy to conveniently classify and segregate your details.

image

By right clicking in the right pane area, and choosing “Add Entry” option, you’ll get below new entry addition form where you can save all your data.

image

That’s all, with this you’ll all your credentials and identity details saved in single and secured file. All you need is to keep your KeyPass master key secured and updated often. You’ll be relived from remembering all your credentials and can simply rely on your KeyPass File which gives you access to all of your credentials and identity details.

Steps to Troubleshoot When Symantec AntiVirus (SAV) Client Gets Disabled

April 24, 2011 Leave a comment

o Connect to PC and check if you can observe anything unusual and fix.

You may be able to identify and fix issue remotely.

o Analyze client event logs to find clue on why SAV got disabled.

Check the client logs.  You may understand that SAV is able to get/download the latest definitions. Couldn’t find any other relevant errors.

o Check in SSC, if you can completely/partially able to manage the client.

You may be able to partially manage the client (like was able to push the defs to client, run the scan) but couldn’t get the logs.

o Verify all SAV client services are running.

In this case, it reported that C$ is inaccessible.

C:\>check-sav-services.bat -m TESTPC1-D -S

DEBUG: Getting the site specific parent servers list.

DEBUG: SAVMGR1 is the local site primary parent server.

DEBUG: SAVUSA1 is the local site primary parent server.

DEBUG: TESTPC1: Querying the services status

DEBUG: TESTPC1: "DefWatch" is running

DEBUG: TESTPC1: "SPBBCSvc" is running

DEBUG: TESTPC1: "SavRoam" is running

DEBUG: TESTPC1: "Symantec AntiVirus" is running

DEBUG: TESTPC1: "ccEvtMgr" is running

DEBUG: TESTPC1: "ccSetMgr" is running

DEBUG: TESTPC1: Checking Symantec installation dir

DEBUG: TESTPC1: Symantec installation dir exists

DEBUG: Reading the GRCUPDATE Time from the server files

DEBUG: Getting the trusted root certificates list from server.

WARN: Failed to open root certificates folder \\TESTPC1\c$\Program Files\Symantec AntiVirus\pki\roots: Invalid argument

INFO: TESTPC1: is a managed client of SAVMGR1 server.

C:\>

o Based on the information from above steps and observations, try to correlate the issue to a possible cause and work on fix.

o Check if C$ is accessible in any other ways. Checking accessing from Explorer, I encountered below error which says about a possible cause.

—————————

Windows Explorer

—————————

\\TESTPC1\c$ is not accessible. You might not have permission to use this network resource. Contact the administrator of this server to find out if you have access permissions. Not enough server storage is available to process this command.

—————————

OK

—————————

o Then remotely connect to compmgmt.msc and found that I was unable to connect to "Logical Disk Manager" and encountered below error which suggested to reboot the workstation.

—————————

Logical Disk Manager

—————————

An unexpected error has occurred. Check the System Event Log for more information on the error. Close the Disk Management console, then restart Disk Management or restart the computer.

—————————

OK

—————————

o Then again checked the eventvwr and found below error event repeatedly logged

Event Type: Error

Event Source: Srv

Event Category: None

Event ID: 2020

0020: 00 00 00 00 00 00 00 00 ……..

0028: 02 00 00 00 ….

o Google for error "The server was unable to allocate from the system paged pool because the pool was empty." and found below relevant M$ articles explaining the issue-cause and fix though they are applicable only for servers.

Server is unable to allocate memory from the system paged pool

The server was unable to allocate from the system paged pool because the pool was empty.

o Felt that issue is relevant to some memory allocation on the PC. Ran tasklist to see which process consuming more memory, etc,. Tried restarting "computer browser" and "server" services but in vain. Then reboot the PC which may fix the issue.
